About Me
My name is Alex Merritt. I will be your homeroom and Language Arts/Social Studies teacher this year. I was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. I went to UNC Chapel Hill and studied English and Spanish. While I was there, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad: summer school in Sevilla, Spain, and a semester in Havana, Cuba. I moved back to Charlotte after college, enrolled in the elementary education Master of Arts in Teaching program at UNC Charlotte, and began my career as a teacher. I taught 4th grade for three years and 5th grade for three years. Then I moved to Austin. This will be my second year as a Blue Jay at Barton Creek Elementary and my eighth year as a teacher.
Let me tell you a bit about myself and my family. I am the oldest of three children. All three of us (and my parents) attended UNC Chapel Hill, so we are Tar Heels through and through. When I’m not teaching, I have several hobbies I enjoy. One is U.S. Masters Swimming at Austin Aquatics and Sports Academy. Another is guitar. When I was in high school and college, I played trombone in marching band. About three years ago, I took up guitar to fill the music void. I have really enjoyed playing it. Finally, I've picked up playing kickball and volleyball here in Austin. It all keeps me busy!
Let me tell you about me as a teacher. My classroom is a place where meaningful, relevant, and engaging learning occurs. You are expected to respect and be kind to yourselves, your classmates, and me. A classroom environment like this one allows you to engage in fun group projects and to have a great deal of choice in what you learn and how you learn it; it also leads to growth, not just as a student but as a person.
