About the 5th Grade Language Arts and Social Studies Curriculum
An amazing year lies ahead of you in 5th grade ELA and Social Studies. In Reader's Workshop, you will be pushed to higher levels of critical thinking about the books you read, especially the connections between the literary elements of a story and its theme(s). You will demonstrate this thinking through in-depth conversations with your classmates and teacher, writing about reading, and projects that will make you flex your creative muscles. In Writer's Workshop, you will "live the writerly life" and go through the writing process to produce several major published pieces. Through reading and writing, you will learn about people whose lives and experiences are sometimes very similar to and very different from your own. In addition, Social Studies this year will give you the opportunity to learn about the history of the United States and to examine how events that happened centuries ago continue to affect us. Throughout this incredible process of discovering the stories of others, you will discover who you are. I hope you see that a life spent reading and writing is rich indeed.
